Small,but perfectly formed

This Little Owl tends to be found in the same tree day after day, month after month and, as it turns out, year after year. The tree is close to the site of Maxey Gravel Pits and I have managed to see the owl in said tree for the past three years.

A 'guaranteed' tick on my annual list.

  1. Nice one John, Hoping to find them on my patch. I've got barn and tawny, little owl would make a nice set.

We are lucky in that we have all 4 owls in the Peterborough area (5 if you include the SEO`s in the winter). I have yet to get a decent photo of the Long-eared Owls though.

    1. Thanks John! This is one owl that is out and about in the daylight. I have seen the Barn and Short-eared in daylight, but Tawny and Long-eared tend to like it a bit darker.

  5. I'm really envious of these John having spent time at the weekend looking for them in a place where they had been reported locally....with no luck :-( I'm particularly envious that you can pretty well be guaranteed to see them at your site! Lovely photos!!

    1. Don't be too envious Jan, it's the only owl I can guarantee the roost site of. I am sure that in time you will find your own and then you will see them every year too.

  6. I know that there are owls near here, I hear them by night and however hard I look, peer up into the trees by day I have ever, ever seen one. We don't have them here. Your photo is a triumph, beautiful subject and great composition.

I am always hearing the Tawny Owl in some trees behind our house, but I am yet to see it!

  7. That's the definitive version of a 'hard stare'!
When an owl looks at you stay looked-at! And, if you're a mouse, you get eaten as well....

    1. Hi Grace,
It definitely isn't nothing, it has taken me a while to get a couple of photos of which I am proud. It helps that there is a breeding box in the same tree which they use.

  15. Nice bird - I said this elsewhere, but I think this slightly hidden view suits owls - gives them a bit of mystery.

Cheers and thanks for linking to WBW.

An air of mystery around a mysterious bird, perhaps?

  16. Super images. How convenient to have any bird be so considerate as to be there when you want a look!
I'm afraid our American birds are quite rude and disappear as soon as they spot you!

    1. Hi Wally,
Many thanks, both for your visit and kind comment. Yes, it is pretty convenient that the bird is always there, one day it won't be and that will be weird!
